April

Week of April 22nd

Hello parents!

Here is your update for the week!

French Language Arts

  • This week, we’ll finish our novel study of L’Assassin impossible.  The marks for their ongoing work is available on PowerSchool.

Social Studies

  • Students have just wrapped up a quiz on the Reformation, so if students in 8-2 were away on Friday or students in 8-1 were away today, they should come and see me to write that ASAP.
  • This week, we’ll be wrapping up our Renaissance unit by looking at exploration, imperialism, and ethnocentrism.  Students will work collaboratively to take notes and do a review before writing a final quiz.

Health

  • This week, our focus will be on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Blood-Borne Illnesses (BBIs).  To start our learning, we will use the STI Tool from the Teaching Sexual Health site: https://teachingsexualhealth.ca/teachers/resource/stis/
  • Following this, our discussion will focus on the following:
      • The importance of prevention (through abstinence, use of condoms, limiting sexual partners, open communication with partners)
      • The importance of testing (any time you have a new partner, how you can get tested)
  • If time allows, we’ll do an “Is it risky” activity, in which students can classify different activities as no-risk, lower-risk, and higher-risk.

As a quick reminder, please check out the School Cash Online entry for the upcoming trip to SAIT!

Have a great week!

Week of April 15th

Hello parents!

Here is your update for the week.

Social Studies

  • Today, students had one last class period to finish up their two-paragraph Renaissance research projects.  Anyone who has not yet turned in this work on Google Classroom should do so tonight, as I’ll be printing out the assignments for assessment tomorrow morning.  As a reminder, once they’re done with their note-taking template, students should hand that in to me personally.
  • Next up, we’ll be looking at the Reformation, with key figures such as Martin Luther, King Henry VIII, John Knox making some major changes with regards to religion in Europe during the Renaissance.  We’ll discuss it as a class, take notes, review these, and then students will make flash cards in preparation for a quiz.

French Language Arts

  • We’ll keep going with our class novel of L’Assassin impossible, hopefully covering chapters 8-11 this week.

Health

  • This week, we’ll begin our class by answering the questions from last week’s question box.  Next up, our lesson will focus on methods of birth control, the different types that are available, and how they work.  Students will be given a copy of the following handout as a reference:
  • I will also do a demonstration of how to use a condom, and students will once again have the opportunity to ask any questions throughout the class and also anonymously at the end of the class.

Quebec Trip – Student Meeting at Lunch Tomorrow

  • All students coming on the Quebec trip should bring their lunch to M. Paulo’s room right at the start of the lunch hour tomorrow, and we’ll. (hopefully) finish going over the points we need to address and any questions they may have.

Have a great week!

Week of April 8th

Hello parents!

Here is your update for this week.

French Language Arts

  • We will be continuing with our L’Assassin impossible novel study, done entirely in-class.

Social Studies

  • Prior to the break, students chose a famous person from the Renaissance and took notes from three different sources about their life.  These notes will be used to write a short biographical paragraph with an overview of their life.  Students in 8-1 were asked to do this today, and 8-2 will do it tomorrow (as they don’t have Social on Mondays).  Following this, we’ll go to part 2 of the research, examining why these people remain influential today.  Like with the biography, students will do a short paragraph to explain their lasting role.

Health

  • This week, we will be starting our outcomes related to human sexuality.  Both classes have their Health classes on Thursdays.  The main topics covered in Grade 8 health are as follows:
    1. Recognize and accept that individuals experience different rates of physical, emotional, sexual, and social development
    2. Identify and describe the responsibilities and consequences associated with involvement in a sexual relationship
    3. Describe symptoms, effects, treatments, and prevention for common sexually transmitted  / blood-borne illnesses; i.e. chlamydia, HPV, herpes, gonorrhea, hepatitis B/C, HIV
    4. Identify and describe basic types of contraceptives; e.g. abstinence, condom, birth control pills
  • To ease in to the unit, we’ll start with the first outcome, which will be covered by reviewing how people change throughout the course of puberty (both physical and social / emotional changes).   Following the review, students will have the opportunity to ask questions both in the class, and anonymously.  Their questions will be addressed the following week in our next lesson.

Robb Nash Concert Wednesday – MANY STUDENTS NOT YET SIGNED UP

  • If you have not already done so, please sign up your child for the Robb Nash concert.  There is no cost, but you must go on School Cash Online to grant your child permission to go.  Any students who do not have permission will stay at the school on Wednesday.
  • We require two more volunteers for the day, so if you’re able to help out, please let me know ASAP!

Thank you, and have a great week!
