November updates

Week of Oct 30 to Nov 3

Bonjour!

What a week! A field trip, Halloween, post-Halloween…!! We still managed to learn a lot and work hard. What an amazing group of kids!

Here’s an overview of where we are at:

FLA (Mme Marie): We have started a novel study called ‘’Joker’’. Ask your child which Joker they wish they had! Our dictée routine continues, it is every Day 4 and is posted on Google classroom. Next one will be on Friday, Nov 10th.

Social (Mme Marie): We are wrapping up our ‘’What is democracy?’’ unit. Students will complete a summative assignment on Monday. They need to think of 4 symbols that they will draw and explain to represent the 4 pillars of democracy (justice, equity, freedom, representation). On Tuesday, we will also have a special guest. Ross Watson is blind. He is a former Cochrane town councilor, Paralympian, is an avid outdoor enthusiast, and a motivational speaker. We look forward to his visit! ( www.rosswatsonspeaker.com )

Math (M Jad): We did our Cartesian Plane quiz this week. We also started working on equality (equal expressions and commutativity). We will finish the first module next week and do some review for our Module test the following week.

Science (M Jad): We started working on leaves identification. Students were supposed to collect 10 different types of leaves (at least half of them are from deciduous trees) during the week end and next week for our project, but with all the snow, the plans might change.

Crossfit: Now that snow is here, it is important that students have dry shoes to wear when we get to the gym. It is also important not to order hot lunch on Crossfit Days (next one is Nov 22nd).

We missed a session on Monday, but it is accounted for. The November 30th class is a replacement for the missed class. Nov 30th is also the last day of Crossfit for this term. It will start again in April.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Week of Nov 14-17

Bonjour les parents de 6-1 et 6-2!

Another week draws to a close, we are getting near the end of term 1. If you’ve been logging in to Powerschool regularly, the report card should not bring any big surprises.

Here’s what’s going on these days:

FLA (Mme Marie): We finished reading the book ‘Joker’. Next week we will create our own Jokers! Ask your child what Jokers are, and which ones they which they had! The dictée routine continues, dictée is always on Day 4 (Next one is Tuesday) and can be found on Google classroom.

Social (Mme Marie): We started a project through which we are studying the Canadian Charter of Human Rights. Ask your child which right they are researching! You may be able to help them understand what it involves and find examples of situations where that right is applied.

Math (M Jad): We had our unit test on Tuesday that we did work on PEDMAS (order of operations). We will have a PEDMAS quiz on Monday (Students can review the answers for the homework sheet we did this week. It’s posted on google classroom). The unit test is marked, but few students were away all week. I am waiting on the test until all students are able to finish their test. Next week, we will start our new unit on decimals.

Science (M Jad): We were working on our leaves project. Students are creating a PowerPoint instead a real leaves book, as it’s impossible to find real leaves with all the snow we have. We are also learning about human impacts on trees and forests, and our next project will be to prepare a debate and different perspectives in regards of Jumbo Glacier Resort in BC.

Other:

  • Band students are doing a fundraiser of Poinsettias and Wreaths.
  • Some students are participating in a Remembrance Day contest (on a voluntary basis). Due date is December 1st.

Have a great weekend everyone!

~Marie et Jad
