October Updates

Week of October 16 to 20

Bonjour parents de 6-1 et 6-2

Another great week is wrapping up. ‘’This is the best day of the year, almost more fun than Calaway Park’’!! was one of the comments I heard today about the Walk-a-thon! Thank you so much to all the volunteers that make it happen.

Here’s an overview of what’s going on in class these days:

FLA (Mme Marie): We are working on reading comprehension and focusing on using context to understand the meaning of new words.

Social (Mme Marie): Our local government unit wrapped up with the election and the unit test. What an exciting unit this has been! I’m a bit worried about finding ways to keep the level of engagement this high for the rest of the year lol! Next, we will go back to what would have normally been our September-October unit, focusing on what is democracy, the 4 pillars of democracy, citizenship and the Canadian Charter of Human Rights.

Math: (Monsieur Jad): We continued working on plotting coordinate points in a Cartesian Plane. Next week, we will use this knowledge to start graphing Equations and Relations.

Science (Monsieur Jad): We are still working on our trees and forests unit. This week, we did review for our mid-unit quiz and we had our quiz on Tuesday. We started learning about leaves and started to prepare for our Leaf Chromatography Lab next week. A leaf identification project is also starting next week.

Other: Camp Horizon forms are due by Tuesday morning at the latest. We will need one more parent volunteer for this October 30th field trip.

The Powerschool website is up and running, and there are lots of marks and comments for each subject. However, it has been brought to my attention that some people may not be able to view the marks and comments. Try logging in from a computer instead of your phone. If that still doesn’t work, the system may prompt you to send your feedback to Powerschool directly, which could be useful. You can also let me know what issue you’re having and I’ll try to find out who can help out with this. (Your login and password is the same one you’ve used in the past years. It is also glued in your child’s agenda.) Also, if you subscribe to the weekly email update from Powerschool and it tells you that there are no new marks, it is likely wrong. There are quite a few marks in there. Sorry about these glitches that are out of our control.

Curriculum work: I (Mme Marie) will be away for 3 days next week. As you probably already know, I work for Alberta Learning on the development of the new curriculum. My focus is on FLA. I go to Edmonton once a month for 2 or 3 days to work with the committee. I have the same sub (Mme Sollid) replace me each time to ensure continuity. She’s great, and we work together to make sure that the routines and the learning are not impacted.

During the interviews on Wednesday and Thursday night, I realized that many parents were not aware that students have different teachers for different subjects this year. Mme Marie teaches FLA and Social, Monsieur Jad teaches Math and Science, and Mrs Maetche teaches ELA. When booking parent-teacher interviews, you are welcome to book with any or all of the teachers.
