This year we will be using our google classroom and google drive accounts for posting assignments or materials. Please check your child’s work periodically and if you have any questions please refer to the weekly email with updates and email me at tabrown@rockyview.ab.ca.

This year your child will learn:

Paragraphing (Starts in September and continues all year):

-Topic sentence structure

-How to choose Star Ideas for paragraphs

-How to provide evidence and detail for the Star ideas

-Adding transitions to sentences

-Conclusion sentence structure

Reading with a critical eye

-Review paragraph structure/introduce essay structure

- Apply a critical eye while reading

Readers workshop

- Students will choose from several novels and be placed with others reading the same novel. They will respond, recall, make predictions, and make inferences.

Poetry reading/ writing/ Learning to summarize

- Students will read poetry and pull out imagery as well as poetic devices and understand the messages in poetry

- Students will learn to write a different type of poetry

Logical Fallacies/ Reader workshop

- Students will learn to identify the different logical fallacies often seen in the media. They will end by performing a skit with fallacies hidden inside for the audience to find.

- Students will get to choose another book to read based on the book reviews from our last workshop.

Passion Project- research, writing, and presenting

- Students will research and write about a passion of theirs. Students will teach an aspect of their passion to the class.

Short stories

- Reading of short stories and using the sign post strategie for critical thinking and understanding the text.

“Who am I” project

-Works on skill building through writing

-Ongoing throughout the year
