September 2014

2 - 5

Welcome back!  This week students had the opportunity to get settled and organized for the year.  Students were asked to ensure that they came to class with a binder (or section of a binder) for ELA, tools for writing (paper, pencil, pens...), a book to read, and an agenda (paper or digital) to keep track of important dates and plan for project completions.  As well, students were introduced to this year's Read, Read, Read project (for the PDF file of this project, please see the Read, Read, Read folder).

8 - 12

Students reviewed the parts of a paragraph this week.  Copies of the paragraphing notes can be found in the Notes & Handouts folder.

15 - 19

This week, students completed and submitted an "Ideal Paragraph" assignment.  For this assignment, students needed to demonstrate an understanding of the parts of a paragraph.

Students were reminded that they were to have selected a book by a Canadian author for their first Read, Read, Read project.

22 - 26

Reminder: Picture Day is Wednesday, September 24th.

Students were given a planning worksheet to help them with the development and planning for their Canadian Authored reading project.  A copy of this worksheet is available in the Read, Read, Read folder.   It is expected that they complete and submit this worksheet along with their final draft of the project that is due October 28th.

Students were introduced to the novel The Outsiders, as well, this week.  The Outsiders has been chosen as a class novel study this year because of its cross-curricular connections with social studies and its theme of worldviews.   Students will read the novel to extend their understanding of worldview and how a group’s worldview is influenced by a number of factors such as geography, society, economy, beliefs, values, etc.  Students will be asked to identify and explain characters’ qualities and motivations by considering their words/actions and interactions with other characters.  They will also be reminded of strategies good readers use to make meaning from text.
